How to Measure for a Suit Jacket

Suit sizes have one number and one descriptive word (for example, 38 short, 40 regular, 42 long). The number refers to your chest measurement, and the descriptive word refers to the jacket length. The final measurement is for arm length.

chestSTEP 1: HOW TO TAKE YOUR CHEST MEASUREMENT

Measure all the way around your chest at its widest point, roughly at the level of the nipples. Ensure the measuring tape passes underneath your armpits and over your shoulder blades at the back. This figure is your chest size.

silo-overarmWith arms at your sides, have someone measure around the broadest part of your shoulders and upper arms. This figure is your over-arm measurement. If your over-arm measurement is more than 7” larger than your chest measurement, choose a jacket one size larger than your chest size. If over-arm measurement is less than or equal to 7”, use chest size to select a jacket.Next, take your over-arm measurement…

STEP 2: HOW TO DETERMINE JACKET LENGTH

Your jacket length is determined by your height and abbreviated S, R, L, or XL.

  • Short (S)- 5’4” to 5’7”

  • Regular (R)- 5’7 ½” to 5’11”

  • Long (L)- 5’11 ½” to 6’2 ½”

  • Extra-Long (XL)- 6’3” and up

STEP 3:HOW TO MEASURE FOR ARM LENGTH

Measure from the tip of your shoulder to the base of your wrist.

How to Measure for Pants

Pants have 2 measurements, waist and inseam. The waist measurement is the width of the top of the pants and the inseam is the length of the legs.

waistlineSTEP 1: HOW TO MEASURE YOUR WAIST

Measure all the way around your waistline, not on but just above the waistband of your trousers. Make sure the measuring tape does not ride over the waistband of your pant, as this will result in too large a measurement.

inseamSTEP 2: HOW TO MEASURE YOUR INSEAM

Measure from the lowest part of the crotch of your trouser, along the inside of your leg, down to where you wish the bottom of the trousers to end. This length should allow the bottom of the trousers to rest on the shoe without touching the floor. Alternately, if you have a well fitting pair of trousers, you can provide its leg measurement if you wish.

How to Measure for Shirt Size

Dress shirts have 2 measurements, neck and arm length.

neckSTEP 1: HOW TO MEASURE YOUR NECK

Wrap a tape measure around the base of your neck, where your shirt collar would normally sit. Add one-half inch to this measurement so that the collar of your new shirt is not too snug.

STEP 2: HOW TO MEASURE YOUR ARM LENGTH

Measure your arm while you are standing with your arm slightly bent at your side. Measure from the nape (back middle) of the neck to the wrist, making sure that the tape measure lays flat across the shoulder. Add one inch to the sleeve-length measurement and round up to the nearest even number.
